Performance Evaluation of HEC-HMS for Rainfall-Runoff Modeling in the Berta Basin

Dicle University, Faculty of Engineering, Department of Civil Engineering, Diyarbakır, Türkiye

Abstract

The rainfall–runoff relationship in the Berta Basin was analyzed for the period of 2006 using the HEC-HMS model. Hydrological calculations based on SCS methods, along with clustering analysis results, were employed to determine the hydrological parameters of the basin. The model performance was evaluated using the Nash–Sutcliffe Efficiency (NSE), the coefficient of determination (R²), and the Root Mean Square Error (RMSE), which were calculated as 0.81, 0.88, and 0.40 m3 s-1, respectively. These results indicate that the model predicts observed flows with a high degree of accuracy. The rainfall–runoff relationship is a critical indicator for understanding the hydrological response of a basin. In this study, the HEC-HMS model successfully captured the relationship between rainfall inputs and discharge outputs with strong accuracy, thereby reliably representing the hydrograph characteristics of the basin. The high NSE and R² values further demonstrate that the model effectively reflects the impact of variations in precipitation on runoff. The results obtained at the Bağlık stream gauging station support the suitability of the SCS Curve Number and SCS Unit Hydrograph methods for this basin. The case of the Berta River Basin provides valuable insights into the challenges and solutions encountered in practical applications of hydrological modeling. Overall, this study contributes to a better understanding of the complexity of the basin’s hydrological structure and lays the groundwork for developing more resilient water resource management strategies in response to future changes.
